Road to Vostok Factions Guide
Know your enemies. Detailed breakdown of all three hostile factions — Bandits, Guards, and the Military — with combat tactics, detection mechanics, and loot tables.
Road to Vostok features three hostile factions, each controlling a distinct zone of the map. Understanding how each faction behaves, detects, and responds to the player is fundamental to survival. This guide covers every faction in depth — their zones, AI behaviours, engagement tactics, and loot potential.
Bandits
Opportunistic scavengers who operate primarily in Area 05. Poorly equipped but dangerous in numbers. They will attack on sight but are manageable for mid-game players. Killing them can yield basic supplies and weapons.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
- Use terrain and buildings to break line of sight
- A shotgun (RM-870) makes short work of bandits at close range
- They rarely have armor — center-mass shots are effective
- Avoid engaging multiple at once — retreat and pick them off
📦 Loot Drops
- Makarov
- Basic food items
- Bandages
- Low-tier equipment
Guards
Corrupt border guards who control the Border Zone crossings. Better equipped than Bandits and capable of calling in air support. They patrol predictable routes and will radio for backup if they spot you. Stealth is the recommended approach.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
- Learn patrol routes before engaging — Guards are on predictable timed schedules
- Use the VSS or suppressed weapons to neutralise quietly
- Never engage their air support directly — hide immediately if a helicopter appears
- The Shipyard area has more Guard density than Highway — plan accordingly
- Killing Guards early alerts others nearby — trigger as few as possible
📦 Loot Drops
- AKS-74U
- AK-12
- Armor plates
- Military-grade medical items
Military
Full military operatives controlling the Vostok zone. Heavily armored, excellent AI, and supported by armored vehicles. In Vostok, death is permanent — every engagement with Military forces must be carefully considered. Avoidance is almost always the better option.
⚔️ Combat Tactics
- Stealth and avoidance are your primary weapons in Vostok
- Move only at night or during bad weather to reduce visibility
- Armored vehicles cannot be destroyed with standard weapons — run
- Stick to building interiors and alleyways to avoid vehicle patrols
- If spotted, do NOT engage — break line of sight and hide immediately
- The VSS Vintorez is the best choice if combat is unavoidable
📦 Loot Drops
- MK18
- KAR-21 variants
- High-tier armor
- Rare electronics
- Military rations

Understanding AI Detection in Road to Vostok
All three factions share the same core detection framework but with different sensitivity values. Detection is triggered by three factors: line of sight, sound, and movement. Each faction has a detection radius that shrinks at night and during rain/fog weather conditions.
Once an enemy enters an alert state (yellow), they begin investigating your last known position. If they visually confirm your presence, they transition to combat state (red). Breaking line of sight and holding still for 10–15 seconds returns enemies to patrol state. Guards and Military do not fully reset until their patrol cycle completes — they remain heightened for 2–3 minutes after losing sight.
The key difference between Guards and Military is the reinforcement mechanic. Guards call for air support after 30 seconds of sustained combat. Military reinforcements arrive within 45 seconds and include armored vehicles that are impossible to engage. This means any Military combat engagement must be resolved within 30 seconds or disengaged immediately.

❓ Factions FAQ
Can you ally with any faction in Road to Vostok?
No. All three factions — Bandits, Guards, and Military — are permanently hostile to the player. There is no faction reputation or alliance system in the current Early Access build.
What is the easiest faction to fight?
Bandits are the lowest threat faction. They are poorly equipped, patrol Area 05 only, and can be engaged selectively. Guards and Military should be avoided whenever possible.
Do Guards call for backup?
Yes. Guards have radios and will call for air support if they spot you. Sustained engagement with Guards rapidly escalates into a helicopter response. Stealth or rapid disengagement is always preferred.
Can you destroy the Military armored vehicles?
No. Armored vehicles in the Vostok zone cannot be destroyed by any player weapon in the current build. Avoidance is the only viable strategy.
What loot do Bandits drop?
Bandits carry basic weapons (Makarov, occasional pistols), food items, and low-tier supplies. They rarely carry rifles or armor. Useful for early-game loot accumulation but not worth farming at mid-game.
Are there any friendly NPCs besides traders?
The Generalist and Doctor are the only friendly NPCs in Early Access v1.0. All other human characters encountered in the field are hostile faction members.
