Road to Vostok Trading Guide
Pure barter economy โ no currency. Learn trader cycles, value tiers, trade routes, and how to fund weapon upgrades safely.
How the Barter System Works
Road to Vostok uses a pure barter economy โ no currency. Every trade is item-for-item; value reflects post-apocalyptic utility, not pre-war price. A working rifle beats gold jewelry. The Generalist (Village) accepts the widest range of goods; the Doctor focuses on medical stock with superior healing items.
Trader Restock Timings
- Generalist: Longer cycle tied to day progression. Return after a full patrol loop (~45โ60 in-game minutes). High-demand items (medkits, rifle ammo) refresh faster than niche stock.
- Doctor: Restocks every 10 real-time minutes โ the most predictable source. End patrol loops at Village to check him.
If the Generalist lacks an item, a short nearby loot run often lets the cycle refresh specific stock.
Best Items to Trade โ Value Tier List
Tier S: Electronics, military weapons from Vostok (MK18, KAR-21), rare ammo (9x39mm, .308).
Tier A: Assault rifles (AKM, RK-95), Medkits, Tourniquets, armor plates.
Tier B: Common ammo (9x18mm, 9x19mm, 5.45x39mm), canned food in bulk, pistols (Makarov, G17).
Tier C: Melee weapons, condiments like Mustard โ trade only when overloaded.
Building a Trade Route
Design a repeatable circuit hitting 4โ6 loot-dense containers, ending at Village in ~30โ40 minutes. Run it 3โ4 times before a major upgrade purchase. Beginner example: Village โ Forest Southeast โ Abandoned Farm โ Forest Northwest outpost โ Village โ steady mid-tier loot with manageable Bandit density.
Trading for Weapon Upgrades
- Makarov โ G17 (magazine upgrade)
- G17 + sidearms โ AKS-74U (first rifle)
- AKS-74U + Border loot โ AKM
- AKM + Vostok extraction loot โ VSS Vintorez (stealth endgame)
Prioritise survivability (armor, meds) before chasing weapon tiers.
Trading for Medical Supplies
Priority: maintain 5+ Bandages in storage, 2+ Tourniquets, 2+ Lotion, 1+ Medkit for serious injuries. The Doctor values caloric food โ trade food toward medical swaps when his stock rotates.
Quest Rewards vs Direct Trading
Generalist quests often beat raw barter โ shelter keys, rare weapons, and passes appear as rewards. Run quests in parallel with loot circuits; quests do not expire.
Border Zone and Vostok Trade Stock
Guards drop AKS-74U, AK-12, and armor โ excellent Generalist fodder. Vostok extractions yield S-tier military gear and electronics that can re-gear you in one session. See Border Zone and Permadeath Guide.

โ Trading FAQ
Does the Generalist buy everything?
The Generalist accepts most categories but gives poor value for non-utility items. Stick to weapons, ammo, medical, and electronics for best rates.
Can you trade weapons between shelters?
No โ you physically carry items. Use shelter storage as a pre-positioned trade stockpile.
What should I never trade away?
Never trade your last Bandage, your only firearm, or your shelter key. Keep one emergency loadout stored in each shelter.
Are there items only available through quests?
Yes. Certain shelter keys, rare weapon variants, and access passes are quest-exclusive.
How do I know an item's trade value?
Value is implicit โ offer items and learn from counter-offers. Electronics and military gear consistently yield the highest return.
Can I trade with Guards or Military?
No. Only the Generalist and Doctor in Village accept trades.
