Road to Vostok Armor Guide
Helmets, chest plates, and carrier rigs โ how tiers work, weight trade-offs, maintenance, and what to wear in Area 05, the Border Zone, and Vostok.
Why Armor Matters in Road to Vostok
Armor is the largest survivability upgrade in the game. The system spans three slots: helmet, chest plate, and carrier rig. Rigs can add inventory space alongside light ballistic protection โ critical for long loot rotations.
Armor Slot System
- Helmet: Mitigates headshots โ essential once you face Guards and Military.
- Chest plate: Highest impact slot vs rifle fire. Prioritise chest protection when entering the Border Zone.
- Carrier rig: Mix of protection and extra grid rows; choose based on run goal (combat vs extraction).
Armor Tiers
Tier 1 (Common โ Area 05): Civilian protection; meaningful vs Bandit pistols (~40% reduction illustrative). Too light for rifles. Generalist trades. ~1.5โ2kg.
Tier 2 (Uncommon โ Border Zone): Soft military armor; viable for Area 05 and early Border work. Guard drops. ~2โ3kg.
Tier 3 (Rare โ Border / Vostok): Reinforced plating; baseline expectation for Vostok. ~3โ4.5kg.
Tier 4 (Legendary โ Vostok): Full military kits; extremely rare. Successful extraction of a complete set is an endgame milestone. 5kg+.
Helmet Priority
Upgrade helmet before maxing chest beyond Tier 1. Border Zone headshots punish un-helmeted players hardest โ even basic helmets reduce instant-kill risk.
Carrier Rig Selection
Loot-focused Vostok runs favour rigs that add 1โ2 grid rows: the extra carry pays for itself on extraction. Combat-first loadouts should max protection within your weight budget.
Armor Maintenance
Armor degrades per hit. A half-broken Tier 2 plate may perform near half its rated value โ false confidence in the Minefield or Vostok gets you killed. Repair at the shelter workbench between runs (see Crafting Guide).
Armor Trade Value
Guard armor is premium Generalist fodder. If a drop is too heavy to wear, still extract and barter it toward weapons or meds โ never abandon intact plates.

โ Armor FAQ
What is the best armor for Vostok?
Tier 3โ4 military plating is effectively required. Soft armor from the Border Zone is insufficient against sustained Military fire โ pair the best chest and helmet you can carry with stealth.
How much armor weight is too much?
Every kilogram reduces sprint time and mobility when hungry. Balance protection with your planned extraction route; carrier rigs with extra grid rows can outperform pure heavy vests for loot runs.
Where do I find Tier 3 armor?
Guard drops in the Border Zone and high-tier containers in Vostok. Trade excess Guard armor at the Generalist for upgrades.
Helmet or chest first?
After a basic chest piece, prioritise a helmet before pushing chest to Tier 2+. Guard headshots are a leading cause of Border Zone deaths.
Does armor condition matter?
Yes. Degraded plates can perform near half their rated protection. Repair at the shelter workbench before serious Border Zone or Vostok attempts.
