Road to Vostok Weapon Tier Guide
Choosing the right weapon for each zone in Road to Vostok is a critical survival decision. This tier breakdown covers the best weapons for each stage of progression.
Early Game (Area 05) — Best Weapons
The Makarov is your default starting point — available through basic trading and its 9x18mm ammo is found in nearly every container in Area 05. It is not powerful, but its reliability and ammo availability make it the safest early-game choice. As soon as you accumulate enough trade stock, upgrade to the AKS-74U. At just 2.8kg with 30-round magazines and solid 5.45x39mm availability, the AKS-74U transforms your combat effectiveness in Area 05 entirely.
The RM-870 shotgun is a sleeper pick for Area 05. Its 80 damage per shell one-shots most Bandits at close range — ideal for the tight corridors of Shipyard and Abandoned Farm buildings. Pair it with a Makarov backup for medium-range engagements.
Mid Game (Border Zone) — Best Weapons
The AKM becomes your primary weapon once you are farming the Border Zone regularly. The 7.62x39mm caliber hits harder per round than the 5.45 family, and Guards in armor require the additional stopping power. The AKM's 600 RPM is controllable and ammo is plentiful from Guard drops. The RK-95 is a direct upgrade — 700 RPM in the same caliber — if you can source one through trading.
The AK-12 is an excellent Border Zone find — Guards carry them, meaning you can self-supply ammunition through successful engagements. At 700 RPM with 5.45x39mm, it bridges the gap between the AKS-74U and heavier caliber rifles perfectly.
Late Game (Vostok) — Best Weapons
The VSS Vintorez is the undisputed best weapon for Vostok runs. Its integral suppressor means every shot is dramatically quieter than any other rifle in the game. The 800 RPM fire rate and 30-round magazine allow for rapid, quiet elimination of isolated Military soldiers. 9x39mm ammo scarcity is the only limiting factor — treat every round as precious.
The MK18, found almost exclusively in Vostok itself, is the lightest rifle in the game at 2.75kg — a significant advantage when you are already carrying a full loot pack on extraction. If you can secure one during a Vostok run, it becomes your primary weapon for future visits.
The legendary KP-31 Suomi deserves special mention. Its 70-round drum and 800 RPM in 9x19mm creates the highest sustained DPS of any weapon in the game. The 6.2kg weight is extreme, but if you are running a dedicated combat loadout rather than a loot run, the KP-31 is the most devastating close-quarters weapon in Road to Vostok.
❓ Weapons FAQ
What is the best weapon in Road to Vostok?
The KP-31 Suomi is the highest-damage SMG with a 70-round drum, but its 6.2kg weight is extreme. For balanced play, the AKM offers the best all-zone performance. For Vostok, the VSS Vintorez's integral suppressor makes it the top choice.
What is the best beginner weapon in Road to Vostok?
The Makarov pistol for your first sessions — cheap, widely available 9x18mm ammo, easy to trade for. Upgrade to the AKS-74U as your first assault rifle milestone.
Which weapons are exclusive to Vostok?
The MK18 and KAR-21 (.223) are found almost exclusively in the Vostok zone. The KAR-21 (.308) also appears primarily in Vostok and high-end Border Zone loot.
What caliber ammo is easiest to find?
9x18mm (Makarov) and 9x19mm (G17, KP-31) are the most widely distributed. 5.45x39mm for the AKS-74U and AK-12 is reliable mid-game. 7.62x39mm for AKM/RK-95 is plentiful in Border Zone areas.
Is the VSS Vintorez worth finding?
Absolutely — it is the best stealth weapon in the game. The integral suppressor and 800 RPM fire rate make it ideal for Vostok runs. The 9x39mm ammo is scarce, so use it selectively.
How does weapon weight affect gameplay?
Every kilogram in your inventory reduces your sprint duration and movement speed at critical hunger levels. The KP-31 at 6.2kg is a major commitment. Balance damage output against mobility requirements for your planned zone.
