Road to Vostok Beginner Guide
Everything you need for your first run — inventory setup, first trades, shelter unlocking, and surviving Area 05 on your way to the Border Zone.
First Steps in Area 05
When you first load into Road to Vostok, you spawn in Area 05 — the Finnish side of the border and your relative safe haven throughout the early game. The first thing you should do is locate the Village hub. Village contains the two most important NPCs in the game: the Generalist trader and the Doctor.
Do not rush into combat. Your starting inventory is sparse, and dying before your first shelter save means losing everything. Walk carefully, use the map to orient yourself, and head directly to Village. The forest paths leading to Village are patrolled by Bandits, but they are avoidable if you stick to the treeline edges.
Once at Village, speak to the Generalist first. He will offer you introductory quests that serve as a tutorial for the barter system and basic progression. Completing even one quest will reward you with shelter access — your single most important early-game priority.
Check in with the Doctor next. Even if you have no injuries, familiarize yourself with his inventory. He restocks medical supplies every 10 minutes, making him a reliable source of Bandages, Lotion, and Tourniquets. Keep a mental note of what he carries and what items he accepts in trade.
Mastering the Inventory System
Road to Vostok's Tetris-style inventory is unlike most survival games. Every item occupies a specific grid shape in your backpack, and fitting everything efficiently is a core skill. Early runs will feel cramped — that is intentional. Learning what to carry and what to leave behind is a major progression milestone.
Priority carry list for beginners:
- 🩹 3× Bandage — minimum at all times. Bleeding kills faster than bullets.
- 💊 1× Lotion — for wound treatment and infection prevention.
- 🍱 2× Canned food (Meatballs or Pea Soup) — lightweight and effective.
- 🔫 Makarov + 2 spare magazines — reliable sidearm with widely available ammo.
- 🔦 Flashlight — essential for night runs and dark building interiors.
Leave heavy items like the Field Ration (1.2kg) or bulky weapons at your shelter unless you are planning a long deep run. Every kilogram matters when you are running from Guards. Practice rotating items in your grid by right-clicking — most items can be flipped to fit more efficiently.
Your First Trades
Road to Vostok uses a pure barter economy — there is no currency. Every item has an implicit exchange value based on its survival utility in the post-apocalypse. The Generalist accepts almost any category of item but gives better value for weapons, ammunition, and medical supplies. Food items trade at low value unless the trader specifically needs them for a quest.
Best early-game trade strategy: Loot every container you find — crates, lockers, backpacks, and car trunks all contain tradeable items. Anything you cannot use immediately has trade value. Prioritize trading for Bandages and spare Makarov magazines in your first session. Once you have survival secured, trade up towards a longer-range weapon for Area 05 patrols.
The Generalist restocks regularly — if he does not have what you need, come back later. Do not waste good trades on low-priority items. The Doctor restocks every 10 minutes specifically, so check him frequently when you are injured or preparing for a long run.
Unlocking Shelters
Shelters are the only save points in Road to Vostok. Dying outside a shelter means losing everything you were carrying at the time of death (in Area 05 and the Border Zone — Vostok is permanent). Unlocking your first shelter is the single most important early-game objective.
Complete the Generalist's introductory quest as your first priority — the reward is typically a shelter key for a safe house near Village. Once unlocked, always return to your shelter at the end of each run to deposit high-value loot and save your progress.
Shelter tips for beginners:
- Unlock at least 3 shelters in Area 05 before attempting the Border Zone.
- Store a backup weapon, food supply, and medical kit in each shelter as an emergency reserve.
- Use shelters as fast-travel anchor points — plan your runs to end near an unlocked shelter.
- The shelter customization system is cosmetic but rewarding — completing it unlocks additional storage slots in some shelters.
Early Combat Basics
In Area 05, your primary enemy is Bandits — poorly equipped scavengers who attack on sight. They are dangerous in groups but manageable individually. The golden rule of early-game combat in Road to Vostok: never engage more than one enemy at a time if you can avoid it.
Use buildings and trees to break line of sight. The AI will lose track of you if you break visual contact and hold still for several seconds. This lets you reset engagements and pick your moment. A single Makarov shot to the torso followed by a follow-up to the head is enough to drop a Bandit.
Always treat bleeding immediately after combat. Untreated bleeding drains your health rapidly and can kill you minutes after a fight you technically "won." Keep bandages in a quick-access slot so you can apply them without opening the full inventory screen.
Safe Routes in Area 05
Area 05 has several key locations beyond Village: Shipyard (north, near the border), Highway (northeast, Guards territory), and various forest outposts. For beginners, stick to routes between Village and nearby abandoned buildings within the forest.
Recommended beginner patrol loop: Village → Forest Southeast → Abandoned Farm → back to Village. This loop has predictable Bandit spawns, decent container loot, and is fully within Area 05 (no Guards or Permadeath risk). Run it 3-4 times to build up trade stock and equipment.
Avoid the northern sections of Area 05 until you have proper armor and a rifle. The Shipyard is tempting for its loot density but features significantly more enemies and is a gateway to Guard territory.
Recommended Beginner Loadout
| Slot | Item | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | AKS-74U | Lightweight (2.8kg), common ammo, excellent damage for Area 05 |
| Sidearm | Makarov | Backup weapon, 9x18mm ammo everywhere |
| Medical | 3× Bandage, 1× Lotion, 1× Tourniquet | Covers bleeding, wounds, and emergency limb damage |
| Food | 2× Meatballs | Best weight-to-hunger ratio for medium runs |
| Ammo | 3× magazines (5.45x39mm) | 90 rounds — enough for 2-3 engagements |
| Utility | Flashlight | Essential for indoor exploration |
Preparing for the Border Zone
Before you attempt the Border Zone, you should have completed the following milestones in Area 05:
- ✅ At least 3 shelters unlocked with emergency supplies stored in each
- ✅ An assault rifle (AKS-74U minimum, AKM preferred) with 90+ rounds
- ✅ Basic armor plates providing some ballistic protection
- ✅ Full medical kit: Bandages, Tourniquet, Lotion, Medkit
- ✅ Completed all Generalist starter quests to unlock Border Zone access
- ✅ Understanding of patrol patterns and how to disengage from combat
The Border Zone introduces Guards — a significant step up from Bandits. They have radios and can call air support. Stealth becomes far more important. Read the Survival Tips guide before your first Border Zone run, and study the Border Zone map guide to learn Guard patrol routes.
