Road to Vostok โ Border Zone Map Guide
The most dangerous non-permadeath zone. Shipyard, Highway, Minefield, Radar, Guard patrols, air support, and safe crossing routes.
Border Zone Overview
The Border Zone is the contested no-man's-land between Finland and Russia โ the most dangerous non-permadeath zone in Road to Vostok. Corrupt Guards patrol in organised groups with radio backup and air support. The terrain mixes industrial facilities, open highways, dense minefields, and radar installations.
Unlike Area 05's forgiving Bandit encounters, a single mistake can escalate into an air-support pursuit. Every run requires deliberate preparation and an exit strategy.
Key Locations
๐ข Shipyard (north Area 05 / south Border Zone boundary) โ The southern Shipyard is Area 05; northern warehouses enter Guard territory. Ideal introduction to Guard-level combat. Very high container density: weapons, armor, electronics.
๐ฃ๏ธ Highway (northeast) โ Open road with wreck loot. Guards patrol in 2-soldier pairs on ~5-minute cycles. Use drainage ditches and wrecks for cover.
๐ฃ Minefield (central) โ Soviet-era minefield blocking the direct northern route. Safe paths exist; memorise them before crossing. Tip: hug the far western edge for the widest safe lane.
๐ก Radar Installation (northwest) โ Decommissioned radar with strong electronics loot. Moderate Guard presence; excellent for Generalist trade stock.
Guard Patrol Patterns
Guards move in 2โ3 soldier groups on semi-fixed routes:
- Shipyard North Gate: 2 Guards, ~4-minute cycle
- Highway Central: 2 Guards, ~5-minute cycle, east-to-west
- Minefield Perimeter: 3 Guards, ~6-minute cycle
- Radar Exterior: 2 Guards, ~3-minute tight loop
Detection: line of sight ~60m day / ~30m night or rain; running footsteps ~40m; gunfire ~200m; radio call triggers reinforcement.
Air Support Mechanics
If Guards radio backup, a helicopter arrives in 60โ90 seconds. It sweeps your last known position. Countermeasures: enter a building immediately, lie prone away from windows, do not shoot the helicopter, hold 2โ3 minutes until the sweep moves on.
Crossing Strategies โ Shipyard to Vostok Entry
Route A โ Western Forest Bypass (recommended): Avoid the Highway; skirt the Minefield's western edge; approach Vostok from the northwest. Fewer Guard encounters.
Route B โ Highway Rush: Fast, high risk. Sprint ditches at night/rain between patrol cycles. Not for first crossings.
Route C โ Radar Approach: Loot electronics, proceed north through the rear fence gap toward the Vostok corridor. Medium Guard density, valuable side loot.
Minefield Safe Path (Detailed)
The safe corridor runs along the far western edge. Landmarks: enter at the broken fence post (southwest); follow wooden stakes north-northwest; at the large boulder angle slightly east (~15ยฐ); continue to the collapsed watchtower; final 20m north is clear โ sprint to tree cover. The eastern ~70% is densely mined.
Loot Priority in the Border Zone
- Electronics (Radar) โ highest value per weight
- Guard weapons โ AKS-74U, AK-12
- Armor plates
- Ammunition caches (Shipyard warehouses)
- Highway vehicle parts โ moderate trade value, heavy

โ Border Zone FAQ
What is the safest route through the Border Zone for beginners?
The Western Forest Bypass โ avoid the Highway, skirt the Minefield western edge. Longer but significantly fewer Guard encounters.
How do I avoid triggering air support?
Do not engage Guards in groups, do not fire in open terrain, and always have an interior building within sprint distance before engaging any Guard.
Can Guards follow me into Area 05?
Guards do not pursue into Area 05 territory. Crossing back into Area 05 from the Border Zone ends any active Guard pursuit.
What is the minimum gear for a Border Zone run?
Assault rifle (AKS-74U minimum), basic armor set, 2ร Tourniquet, Medkit, and 90+ rounds. Do not attempt the Border Zone without armor.
Are there shelters in the Border Zone?
One staging shelter exists near the Shipyard Approach โ unlocked via late-game Generalist quests. There are no shelters deep in the Border Zone or Radar area.
How do I know if I've entered Guard territory?
The ambient music shifts and the environment lighting becomes slightly more industrial/military. The Shipyard north warehouse is the clearest visual transition marker.
